Sterling Hundley
Looks Fast! | Speed in Composition
This video, recorded in a classroom setting at the first ever TAD workshop in Kansas City, MO, features
award-winning illustrator Sterling Hundley as he takes students through his process of painting a horse and jockey.
The real subject matter of this video, however, is concept.
For Sterling, an illustration is built on the foundation of a strong idea,
and this is what guides the artist throughout the creation of a painting. In this case, the concept is "speed", and the video begins
with a discussion of different means to convey that message. This is followed by the actual execution, and the
materials are kept to a minimum (white acrylic + two watercolors) to help keep the focus on idea instead of technique.
Throughout the video students and faculty ask questions about a number of topics ranging from photography to art directors,
and Sterling's responses are always articulate and full of clarity. This 1.5 hour demo ends with a nearly finished painting,
and the viewer will walk away with a much stronger understanding of the underpinnings of a compelling illustration.

Veronique MeignaudStream of Conciousness Illustration
While creating a new piece, a lot of trained artists already have a precise idea of what they are after. The picture they want to create is like a set destination, and they work rigorously until this destination is reached. While technique and academic training are necessary in the creation of any piece of artwork, some artists feel they are sometimes trapped by these and feel a need to free themselves. This often manifests with an artist being bored by his own work, feeling that he lacks imagination.
One can reasonably ask themselves if for such artists, these academic methods discriminate against the most unconventional ideas. And yet, these are the ideas I want to embrace and develop.
Rather than working with a set destination in mind, I like my personal works to take me wherever they want to go. Thus the destination is never set, it evolves during the making of the picture. This is the way I feel the most free, and this is the way that I feel my ideas won't curb themselves to a limited space. To achieve this, I use a work flow based on spontaneity and instinctive feeling. Of course, a basic idea of what I want to do is necessary, or else it would be like closing my eyes and wiggling my hand at the canvas aimlessly. That starting idea can be anything, but I will use it as a starting point rather than as a goal. I won't use construction lines. What I want is to explore the canvas in a more unpredictable way, and the key to that is to take advantage of accidents.
While my work can be described as being figurative, the path that leads me to that is a more abstract one. I feel that the more free I am, the more free the observer will be to interpret my works. Of course, such a free approach makes more sense in the context of more intimate, personal works.

Jason ManleyComposition
During the lecture, many major works of art, of the best in history, are analyzed and deconstructed to illustrate all points. Historical composition is one of the key tools concept and 3d artists, illustrators, and fine artists, have at their disposal to improve their works from imagination and from life. I do not think this info is all together in one place, anywhere else.
I have personally visited most of the major museums around the world in my studies of this precise topic. I have learned composition with some of my art heros and most respected colleagues incuding Jim Garrison, Mark English, Malcolm "Skip" Liepke, Gary Kelley, Jack Unruh, Marshall Vandruff, Justin Sweet and many others. I studied in the museums. I studied in my history books. I then spent years in the industry working with all those you know from MB. The knowledge I pooled is now summed up, organized, and in one lecture video.
More info to come...for now, here are a selection of the many images I cover from throughout art history in order to teach this topic.

You fail to get the job, which means you fail to make the money, which means you fail to buy a toothbrush, which means your breath stinks.

In this download, Jason Chan takes the viewer through the completion of two sketches, the first of which being his winning Thunderdome entry at the Revelations workshop in Seattle. He won't tell me where the second image came from, but it does look like his own work (pretty much). As usual, Jason delights the viewer with his discussion of both technical and non-technical apsects of art making. He also talks about his approach to working on shorter images, which gets into the nitty gritty of what makes an image really work.

kemp Remillard vehicle concepting
This four-part series covers the process and working methods Kemp uses for designing science-fiction vehicles for the games and entertainment industry.
In part 1, Kemp utilizes a typical job sheet to assess the goals and needs of a client. Once he has his general direction he begins creating thumbnail sketches in Photoshop to begin the design process. Working in a side-view, plans are drawn up to work out issues of proportion and engineering.
Part 2 begins with Kemp choosing the three best thumbnails and taking them into Google Sketchup. The rough models are made and then Kemp takes these into Photoshop to add mood, lighting, and texture.
Parts 3 and 4 refine the processes above to further develop a single design. The Sketchup model is finalized and then Kemp returns to Photoshop to create a deliverable ortho and final illustration for a client.
The whole series provides a beautiful example of the way in which artists (and their clients) can use the iterative process to refine a rough idea into a fully developed asset. Kemp’s candid narrative reveals a great depth of experience in areas of design, approach, client relations, and more.
